3 Habits to Teach Kids for Good Long-Term Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

Teaching kids can be a very frustrating job, and yet, it’s the job of every parent on the planet. If you have children, you know how hard it is to get them to listen, much less to do what you ask. For some things, it’s not a seriously big deal if your children won’t listen. Cleaning their room, wearing shoes that match their outfit … these are things that kids are going to struggle with just because they’re kids. But when it comes to the important stuff -- like their health -- getting them to listen and follow your advice definitely matters. So how do we do this? If you want to set your children up for better health, take a look at these three key habits to teach them starting now.

Exercise

Exercise is important for every person of every age, and it’s going to become increasingly important as you age. If you can, teach your children the importance of exercise right now. How? Kick them out of the house! OK, maybe not literally, but turn off the TV, put on some shoes, and go outside as a family. Leave all of the devices indoors. You can also join a gym as a family, involve them in sports and activities in the community, and participate in outdoor activities such as gardening. The most important part? Lead by example. If you want your kids to move, you have to get yourself moving first.

Diet Control

Kids don’t have to be on a diet, but they should be learning about healthy eating habits. Make sure that your menu at home is filled with nutritious foods. Veggies, lean meats, and fruit should dominate the kitchen. Sweets and chips and fried foods might occasionally mix into your life, but they shouldn’t be staples. The better eating habits that your children learn while they’re young, the easier it is to maintain as they get older. Let them get involved in the cooking and preparing, allow them a little creativity, and learn about what’s going into the body all together as a family.

Chiropractic Care

Many don’t begin to think about chiropractic care until middle age, but this little habit is a great thing to include in the lives of children. Why? Chiropractic care can bring many benefits to life, and this includes for kids. Regular care might reduce pain, improve mobility, increase focus, improve sleep, move digestion along, and make you feel better overall. For kids specifically, care might help with growing pains, reduce colic in infants, and lower the amount of ear infections that your kids experience. And to top it all off, taking your kids to the clinic on a regular basis helps them learn that it’s the little things that you do, the everyday habits, that truly make the biggest impact on long-term health and wellness.
