Exercising in the Cold Can Be Easy
By Tom Herrin
Making a commitment to exercise can actually get pretty involved. It is often difficult to stay focused, and the least of things can sometimes cause a setback. For some of us, it is simply the schedule of activities that we attempt to keep. For others, it may be trying to stay on track as we may lose ground to things like struggles with diet. Still others of us, who include outdoor exercise as a big part of our programs, may find it extremely challenging to remain steady as temperatures and conditions change so much.
For me, as a bicycle rider, dealing with the cold can be a huge obstacle. Deciding just how to balance wearing clothes that are warm enough to begin my ride against avoiding becoming too warm is pretty major. Since I usually ride in the evenings, the temperatures may fall between the time I start my hour-long ride and the time I finish. Dressing in layers can be a good answer to this and other problems.
A Tight Layer
It is suggested that we wear a base layer that is tight-fitting and lightweight. It should wick away moisture as it is pretty uncomfortable to exercise in the cold when your clothes are saturated with perspiration. Of course, good airflow will help to alleviate this situation as well. With today's technology, there are plenty of good products on the market that can fill this need. You will find this a great improvement of clothing of the past.
Insulate in the Middle
The second layer needs to be the one that insulates. In other words, it keeps us warm. This is still a generally traditional concept. If it is lightweight but bulky, it should prevent rapid heating or cooling. Older materials such as fleece, wool, or down can work, but three are many newer thighs that can also do a good job.
A Peel-Away Layer Helps Outside
The last layer is the one that you can use to make adjustments. It should still be lightweight and allow air and moisture to move. It is very helpful if this layer has removable parts so that you can make the necessary changes that keep you from getting too warm or cooling off too fast. Most of these items are very affordable and available at all kinds of retail stores. For a good program in the cold, try layers.
