Moving in Slow Motion at Work or at Home?

By Sandy Schroeder

Sometimes when we run out of energy, there are reasons for tiredness beyond lack of sleep or a bad diet. If you eat healthy, exercise, and keep fairly regular hours, you may have to look further to find out why you are tired.

If you find you are running out of energy midday every day, you might want to look closer at possible underlying causes such as unresolved stress, lack of control or needed changes. FastCompany focused on this recently, providing some good tips.

Unresolved stress – If you have issues with your family or your job that are not solved that stress can wear you down and tire you out. At home the relentless schedule to keep everything going may simply need some extra support. Finding better ways to streamline everything could make you feel a lot better. At work, you may not need a different approach to the day or a better way to keep the work flowing. Try to find out what is bugging you to ease the stress.

Lack of control – If you are running out of gas every day, the problem may be how you feel about life. Looking closer, you may feel like you need a different atmosphere at home in the evening, one that relaxes and satisfies everyone instead of becoming a contest of wills. Sit down and talk with your family and try a few new things to have more family dinners, or quiet before bedtime to create a new atmosphere. Looking closer at work, you may need to try some new approaches to your work, or talk with your co-workers about mutual concerns.

Change required – When energy drops away, it really may be time for a vacation, some weekend getaways, or a different routine at home or at work. Take a good look at what’s going on with you and those around you and take steps to try a few new things.

Rethink your work schedule – You may be overloading every day, creating stress for yourself and those around you. Break out your tasks and reassess the time involved.

Have a family discussion – If things are not flowing well at home, it may be time for everybody to look at the problem. There may be no down time as a brisk schedule just keeps everybody moving or some extra help be needed.

Try a once-a-month escape – Make room every month for something special. Clear your schedule and enjoy a trip, party, barbecue, or other excursion. Letting off a little steam could make the rest of the month work just fine.

When you ease the stress, find more control and try a few changes; you may also find you have more energy.
