What Stress Does to You and Your Body

By Rachel Shouse

How to relieve stress is, unfortunately, a very common question of today. Your stress could be from work, school, your home life, etc. It's important to understand that a lot of what's going on may be out of your control. You may have to fight your way out of the stress. Some of you may have an overwhelming schedule, you could be a single parent, or a young adult who's just trying to figure life out, etc. It's helpful to have some truly helpful stress-relieving tips to fall back on during times like this. Knowing what stress is doing to your body, knowing when to say "no," and learning new stress-relieving tips are all going to benefit you in some way.

What Stress Does to Your Body

Stress is a rough problem to conquer. While a lot of your problems may be outside of your control, the best thing you can do to conquer your stress is to make a plan. Plan how you're going to handle the problems that you have. Spend a little time brainstorming what you can do to fix what you can. As for the stresses outside of your control, it's time to embrace some stress relief tips and remind yourself that you're doing your best. Literally, repeat it to yourself.

Learning When to Say No

For those of you with some people-pleasing tendencies, this is for you. I know you only mean well. You wouldn't put all the work into what you do without a heart of gold. You may not be this person, but I bet you know someone like this. There are some things to consider before saying "yes." Think about your priorities. Is this going to be a long-term thing? You may very well be able to fit it into your schedule, but think before agreeing to new commitments.

3 Stress-Relief Tips

There are so many ways to relieve stress. It's important to at least know a few, just in case.

  • Exercise - This may not be seen as a stress reliever. If you think about it though, you're really not focused on your problems when you're working out. You're too busy, therefore you get some stress relief.

  • Healthy diet - You can't expect yourself to operate and feel the best if you're ingesting junk food around the clock. Think about how making a few changes at a time could benefit your everyday life.

  • Seek help - If you feel like you've tried everything, reach out. You may be surprised by how well talking to a counselor could help.

It's so important to take good care of yourself during stressful times. While life is busy, try to squeeze in 30 minutes of alone time per day. This could really help as well.
