How to Go From Starter to Finisher
By Genevieve Smith
Some people are natural finishers. And others are born to be starters. The world couldn’t keep spinning without them both. One personality type brings in a creatively-inspired flood of ideas, the other brings them home. Do you know which one you are? Let’s take a look at how to be a stronger starter and get the job done.
You Don’t Need to Be Instantly Good at Something
Many strong starters hit hiccups along the way of a project. They begin to critique themselves. The only path to growth, however, is repetition. Know that no good product ever came out of thin air. Sink into the process of trial and error, finding amusement in the journey, and you may just find yourself hitting a comfortable stride you didn’t know you had in you. Push through the discomfort to reach a place where you'll only find improvement.
Focus on What’s Left Rather Than What’s Done
A starter gets a thrill out of beginning something new. Push the extra mile by looking at accomplishments in terms of what's left to go rather than what you've pulled off. Discrepancy motivates. Of course, celebrate the progress made, but by re-working your perspective to focus on how much you have left to go, you're more likely to bring it home. Sometimes, we lose steam when we get giddy about what we've pulled off, and have trouble continuing on until a project is fully complete. You can look at each stage of progress as a new beginning, to allow for a full cycle of what's been done versus what's left to go.
Find a Finisher to Pair Up With
If you can find a finisher to pair up with, the opportunity to develop an incredible symbiotic dynamic awaits you. While starters are unparalleled idea-makers, finishers feel at home in the day-to-day routine of execution. That said, while you search for a partner to join forces with, believe in your ability to grow as a starter and know that the next opening awaits you -- once you finish.
Knowing how you operate can be the key to your success in living a satisfying life. Embrace your personal strengths to find the right groove for your unique skillset and needs. Whether it be pairing up with someone of complementary abilities, or embracing your own journey, knowledge of your working style is power. Create on!
