Simple Ways to Start a Healthy, Mindful Day

As someone who struggles with the mornings, I like to stick to simplicity in the morning to get my day going. Let's be real, most of us would rather just stay in bed, so incorporating something productive to look forward to first thing in the morning sets your mood for the rest of the day.

  • Don't hit snooze - By hitting the snooze button, you are interfering with the body's natural wake mechanisms, which makes you more exhausted throughout the rest of the day
  • Hydrate - I start my day with a glass of lemon water and, only after I'm done with that, make my way to my morning coffee
  • Don't reach for your phone - Not only is it a distraction that can hijack your morning -- it is also starting your day on someone else's terms instead of your own
  • Wash your face - My mom always gave me the advice if you are extra tired that morning or day to splash your face with cold water; it really does the trick to wake you up when you really need it
  • Stretch - Slowly wake up your body by stretching your muscles
  • Make your bed - Tackling something small in the morning and making your space tidy will help to tackle bigger tasks during the day
  • Exercise - Whether you prefer a morning run, yoga session, weights, or a hike, do what works best for you
  • Write your daily intentions and to-do list - Setting your intentions and to-dos in writing will make it easier to stay focused on what matters in the present
  • Listen to music - Playing music that makes you happy in the morning will infect your mood and may even get you dancing
  • Drink your hot beverage of choice - Whether it be coffee or tea, a hot drink in the morning is so comforting
  • Read - Wake up your mind with something you enjoy reading or learning about
  • Eat a healthy breakfast - Fuel your body with food that will give you the energy you need for the day
  • Unload the dishwasher - This simple, productive task makes it much easier to load and do dishes later in the day and setting yourself up for productivity
  • Get ready for the day - Now that you are all set, it is time to get ready for the rest of the day
