Easy Solutions to Reducing Sugar Intake

By Stepy Kamei

You may already be well aware of the negative impact that consuming too much sugar can have on your health and well-being, but are you sure you're doing everything you can to keep your cravings for sugar in check? It's not hard to understand why it's so easy to over-indulge on sugar -- it tastes great on its own, it makes many other meals and beverages taste better, and it satisfies the primal cravings of our limbic systems. Unfortunately, many of us know too well that there can be too much of a good thing, especially when we take into account the high rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity plaguing our society currently.

Sugar intake is at least partially to blame for these staggering health problems and concerns. Be sure you're taking the right steps toward reducing the amount of sugar you consume on a regular basis in order to maintain your overall health and well-being.

Eat the Right Foods

You may be surprised to hear this, but it's true: Sometimes, your body craves sugar, and thus sweet foods, simply because it's not getting the nutrients it really needs to thrive. Cravings are often born out of a physical necessity, and cravings for sugar could signal that your body is running low on energy. Try bulking up your diet by adding more foods which are rich in protein and fiber. These important nutrients work to help you feel fuller longer, and will provide you with stable and long-lasting amounts of energy to help you get through the day.

Cravings can also come about as a result of psychological issues as well. You may be tired, stressed, or simply bored, and so you end up finding yourself reaching for cookies or chocolate bars. The next time these cravings hit you, try to assess if you really need food, or if you're craving another kind of fulfillment.

Replace Sugar with Healthier Alternatives

Of course, sometimes you just need to sweeten up your meals or drinks a little bit. Start considering healthier alternatives to sugar for a healthier way to add a sweet taste. Honey is one of the most common substitutes for sugar, and for good reason. Not only is it natural, it tastes delicious and is full of super healthy antioxidants to improve skin and heart health. Try to use raw, organic honey -- and if you're looking to quell your allergies, you should know that local honey can help with this issue! Stevia and agave are also excellent choices.
