It's Time to Learn About Heat Exhaustion

By Donna Stark

Are you struggling to get through the hot, muggy days of summer? Are you taking the proper precautions to keep yourself and your loved ones safe? High temperatures and high humidity levels may have been welcomed guests after a long and cold winter, but they aren't always what they seem. The health risks that are often associated with them could spell disaster if you aren't aware and proactive. Take a look at the danger that can come when these hotter months of the year roll around.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion isn't just about becoming tired from being out in the sun. It occurs when the body gets too hot because its ability to cool down becomes impaired. This can happen very easily when the temperature and humidity levels are high but is compounded even more when a person engages in physical activity as well. Here are some of the symptoms you need to watch out for.

  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  • Blurred vision
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rapid, shallow breathing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Rapid heartbeat

What to Do When Red Flags Appear

If you or someone near you is exhibiting any of the symptoms above, it is vital to take action right away so you can mitigate any danger. Take a look at what experts recommend to do.

  • Go to a cool spot - If possible, head to an air-conditioned building or home and let your body temperature cool down. If there aren't any around, try to find a shady spot to sit in. Taking a cool shower or placing a cold towel around your neck or on your forehead can help too.
  • Allow your body to rest - Now is the time to give your body adequate rest, so grab a seat or lie down. Don't be in a rush to get back to your physical activity either. Your body is in distress and it needs this time to recover!
  • Take some sips - You may think that by guzzling a lot of your water or sports beverage will be good for your body but that isn't the right approach to take here. Take small, steady sips and drink slowly over the course of an hour or so.
  • Get help - If your symptoms are severe or if they don't get any better after an hour of rest and fluids, seek help from a medical professional. Don't hesitate to call 911 either if the situation is bad enough!

Safe Summer Days Ahead

It's always good to head outdoors and engage in physical activities, but make sure you and your loved ones are staying safe while doing so! By knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and the actions to take if needed, you will feel better prepared for the rest of the summer!
