Be Creative for Better Health in the Cold

By Tom Herrin

As the days become shorter, the nights become longer, and the sun ceases to warm the air as much as may be desired, many people find themselves struggling to get the kind of exercise they would like.  There are several problems associated with this, not the least of which is the challenge of preparing the muscles for working out in the cold.  While it may seem like a fairly simple problem to solve, dealing with it the wrong way may create some real setbacks in a successful program, so it is important to have a good plan.

Warming Up Is More Important

No matter what the conditions are outside, proper warming up is essential to a good workout.  The muscles require good circulation.  This is one of the main goals of warming up.  When the temperatures begin to cool, it is more important than ever. Stretching properly and increasing circulation can help to protect the muscles from injury.  It becomes time well spent.

Phoning a Friend Can Improve Motivation

Knowing that getting out in the cold will be required for a workout is not the most inviting idea.  When that is a reality, it may be be a lot easier to come up with some pretty good excuses.  One of the best ways to avoid this is to include someone else in those workouts.  When the expectations of another person are present, people may feel a greater sense of duty and responsibility.  Letting another person down often is a greater disappointment than oneself.  This shared feeling of obligation may be one of the most effective ways to be certain that a workout will happen.

Using the Space in Your Own Home Can Improve Success

Most homes have a variety of room types. Whether a workout occurs in the bedroom, hall, or some living area, it can add variety to a workout.  I often do some things in my bedroom where space may be limited, then move to my family room where I can have a more open feeling and do a greater number of activities.  For those who prefer to work out to television, music, or some other external stimulus, these different rooms may provide some opportunities to enjoy those things.  The really good thing is that the cold is not likely to be a factor, so you can control your room temperature however you choose. The main thing is don't let the cold interrupt your progress.
