Working When Others Sleep? Protect Your Health

By Tom Herrin

There once was a time in which it seemed as if everyone was on a similar schedule.  Until the invention and development of better electric lights, it was not practical for people to work odd shifts.  As time has passed and things have developed, it is pretty common for people to be on odd schedules.  It certainly is a good way to keep businesses operating around the clock, and it provides more people the opportunity to work.  That is a key in providing a living.  One of the down sides is that working shifts may pose some hazards in several regards.  For those who do shift work or have odd hours, a well-designed routine and schedule may help protect their health.

Develop Some Good Habits

Most people are creatures of some kind of habits.  It seems to be the nature of the beast.  Whatever they start out doing simply becomes a matter of everyday routine.  Some have estimated that there may be as many as 15 million Americans who work some kinds of shifts.  With this kind of number affected, there has been some significant research on the subject.  For those who work in this situation, a few good practices may help.  One suggestion is for them to take a bit of a walk around before their shift begins.  Doing so with some natural light may help to provide some energy that will help to provide a lift.  Another thing may be to avoid drinking caffeinated drinks very late into their shift so that it does not interfere with their sleep afterward.

Create the Right Kind of Lifestyle

When people work those shifts, it is critical for them to prioritize their own health.  Making a point to have at least 10 hours of time each day that is free from work may help.  This should allow better time for quality sleep.  Another thing that may help is for them to take short breaks and move around frequently.  Forming the right kinds of practices may make a world of difference in their ability to function well.  Reducing the risks of accidents is big.

Remember You Have a Life

Even though you may feel stuck in that shift routine, developing a schedule that allows you to spend quality time with family can be huge.  It may be too easy to become that silent member of the family that sleeps and works opposite of everyone else.  You don't want to allow that to happen.  Be prepared and let your shift be a good thing in your life.
