Feed Your Body the Right Post-Workout Snacks

By Donna Stark

If your exercises are intense and you want to build and repair those hard-working muscles when you are done, protein is a must for your post-workout snack. But if you want to feel refreshed and energized for the rest of your day as well, you can't forget to add some carbohydrates in your snack too! Here are a few suggestions for post-workout snacks that will provide your body with the perfect amount of nutrients needed to tone your muscles and fill your energy reserves.

Greek Yogurt

A homemade yogurt parfait is a wonderful snack to treat yourself to any time of the day, but it is especially so for those times after a hard workout. Greek yogurt is naturally high in protein, but you can make it even more nutritious by topping it with fresh fruit and almonds.

Avocado Toast

With just one avocado, a pinch of salt, and a squeeze or two of lime juice, you can turn your bland wheat toast into something pretty special  you can turn it into a nutrient powerhouse. Avocado toast is a great option for your post-workout snack and it becomes even better when you top it with an egg or two!

Protein Shake

Just because you had a bad experience with protein powder in the past doesn't mean your bad luck will continue. There are so many varieties on the market to choose from, you are sure to find one that you like. And when you add a tablespoon of nut butter and some fresh berries to the mix? You will wish you gave it a second chance years ago!

Banana With Nut Butter

Speaking of nut butter, you can't go wrong with cutting a banana in half and topping it with your favorite almond, peanut, cashew, or pistachio butter. Bananas are great to eat after you exercise because they are low in calories and can help decrease post-workout inflammation, and the nut butter will give you an extra dose of protein.

Salmon and Quinoa

Consuming both protein and carbohydrates after exercise is important and you couldn't pick a better duo than salmon and quinoa. Salmon is a great source of protein and omega-3s, and quinoa will give you a constant source of energy hours after your workout.

Giving Your Body What it Needs

The end of a workout doesn't mean you are done working on your body! You still need to fuel it with the right nutrition and with the suggestions above, it couldn't be any easier to do! When you eat well, your body will respond!
