3 Tips to Avoid Tech Neck!

By Sara Butler

You’ve probably heard of text neck, but it’s simply the red-headed stepchild of a much larger issue -- tech neck. Text neck is associated with looking down in a head forward posture at devices; however, you don't have to be looking down to develop problems. Sitting at your desk and working at a computer can put stress and strain on your neck and shoulders, leading to big issues. Here are some tips you can use to help prevent tech neck in your life.

Potential Consequences of Tech Neck

So, what's the big deal with tech neck anyway? Well, tech neck can cause a lot of uncomfortable problems for you, including:

  • Headaches
  • Shoulder pain
  • Neck pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Migraines
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or fingers

These symptoms will not go away without taking action -- and usually will only get worse if you don’t address them with your chiropractor.

Invest in a Good Chair

You need a supportive but comfortable chair in order to stay healthy at your desk. It needs to support your back so it can prevent you from slouching during the day. Also, make sure it has adjustable height so you can make sure your knees and hips are lined up as your feet rest flat on the floor.

Take Stretching Breaks

There are some very simple stretches you can do throughout the day that can make a huge difference in how you feel. Stretching will help improve your flexibility and levels of pain over the course of the day. Desk stretches are great (and a must-do) but you should also make sure to get up at least once every hour – if not more frequently – to move around. Ask your chiropractor about some stretches you can do to ensure you're keeping limber and flexible all day long.

See Your Chiropractor Regularly

Seeing your chiropractor regularly for chiropractic adjustments will make a big difference in how you feel and can help you avoid the consequences of tech neck. They can check to make sure you don’t have any unaddressed joint dysfunction or joint restriction so that you don’t develop problems with your neck or back. If you work at a computer for several hours a day, then you need to make sure you see a chiropractor. Come into The Joint anytime without an appointment and let us help you with your tech neck issues!
