Steps to Smarter Self-Care

By Sara Butler

Many people view self-care a luxury, but the reality is that it’s a necessity in life. You must commit to making it a priority or your health and wellness may suffer. If you can master the art of self-care, then you will be more productive, reduce your stress levels, get healthier, and have more energy. If you’re unsure of the steps you need to take to add more self-care into your life, then here are some easy ways to start.

What You Eat

When you eat, you should aim to eat often but eat light. Try not to go more than three to four hours between snacks or meals. This strategy will help to keep your energy levels up and keep hunger away!

You should also aim to drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, before your first cup of coffee. It helps you wake up and gets your hydration for the day off to a good start. If you need something warm in the morning, then consider a hot cup of water with lemon -- it’s a surprisingly refreshing way to start your day!

At Work

Don’t forget to take short, frequents breaks throughout your day to get your body moving. Sitting in one posture for too long can cause fatigue and lead to posture problems. Try to set a reminder on your computer or phone to take a short break at least once an hour -- or twice an hour if you think you can! The more, the better!

If you can take your lunch break away from the office, then that’s a good self-care tactic too. Removing yourself from technology and getting out in the middle of the day can do wonders for your productivity and state of mind. Plus, a little sunshine is a great way to boost your Vitamin D production!

Sleep

How much sleep do you get each night? You should be getting between seven and nine hours per night -- and that’s sleep time, not just time in bed. Try to have a consistent sleep routine and make sure to turn off the electronics at least an hour before bed to help your brain relax and get in sleep mode. You may also want to try to work in some journaling or meditation in the hour before bed to help you relax.

If you take care of yourself and practice simple self-care, then you'll be healthier and happier!
