5 Tips for Optimal Skin Health

By Brandi Goodman

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. People tend to focus on their internal health, trying to eat better foods and get exercise so their organs will work efficiently. Dangers to your skin can also impact your health. Follow some tips for optimal skin health and keep your skin looking youthful, clear, and glowing.

Wear Sunscreen on Cold Days, Too

Most people realize they'll need to put on sunscreen when it's hot outside and the sun is burning down on them. Sunscreen is necessary on cold days, too. Any time the sun is out, even when it's snowing, sunscreen should be applied. The harmful UV rays can still impact the skin and cause damage, regardless of how the weather feels.

Eat Foods High in Antioxidants

Antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, work to maintain the health of your skin and body. Free radicals that cause damage to your skin can be eliminated with antioxidant consumption. Foods that offer an abundance of them can prevent sagging and wrinkles. Apples, berries, broccoli, spinach, watermelon, and other health foods are terrific sources.

Drink Lots of Water

Staying hydrated does much more than quench your thirst. It ensures your skin remains hydrated and supple as well. The blemishes and inflammation caused by toxins can be eliminated with high water consumption. Drink eight glasses per day at minimum.

Wash Your Makeup Brushes

Women who use makeup brushes to apply makeup to their skin need to wash them often. Some completely ignore this fact and continue to use the same bacteria-ridden brushes for years on end. This can cause serious damage to the skin. Make sure you're using soap and water and washing the brushes off between uses. You should also replace brushes every few months or so.

Try a Detox Mask

A detox is a great way to rid the toxins in your body. While most try this in bath form, adding Epsom salt or other ingredients to the water, a detox mask for the face is also possible. A clay-based mask will help to remove oil from the skin and leave it shiny and smooth.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month sheds light on just how we should be caring for our skin. Many things can have a negative impact on the way our skin looks and feels, and may even cause cancer if we're not careful. Do your part to protect yourself every month of the year so you can maintain your skin's beauty and health.
