Healthy Habits for Kids
By Sara Butler
The end of the school year has not been a normal one for kids across the nation, but that doesn't mean healthy habits should be out the window. Schedules are pretty important for kids and they'll eventually have to go back to school. That's why you should endeavor to keep a few things consistent for your children all summer long. Here are some tips to help.
Keep That Bedtime Routine
A bedtime routine is essential for children of all ages, especially school-aged kids. A good night's sleep can have a huge impact on their performance in school and their ability to stay focused. Make sure your child gets enough sleep each night by keeping their bedtime routine continuous no matter what time of the year it is.
Don't let them go to bed with the television or laptop on or looking at their phone in bed. If that doesn't help them to fall asleep easily, then a warm bath or shower before bed along with a bedtime story might just do the trick.
Give Them a Good Breakfast
Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day! Seriously, it helps to set your mind and body up for the entire day ahead, so don't let your kids skip it. You don't have to make them a four-course meal to get the job done. As long as you give them some quality carbohydrates and protein, you can't go wrong. Smoothies are a great option as well as an egg on whole grain toast or a banana with peanut butter.
Keep Them Hydrated
Kids always seem to want sugary fruit drinks or soda. While those things aren't bad as a special treat, they should be far from what your child drinks every day. What they need is water to help keep them hydrated properly and milk to help strengthen their bones and support their rapidly growing bodies. A properly hydrated body can go a long way in helping to keep your kids healthy.
Watch Screen Time
It can be tempting to let your kids go crazy when school is out on the screen time, but that's really the worst thing for them. Too much screen time can lead to big problems such as childhood obesity or tech neck, both of which can impact their quality of life overall. Try to encourage your child to get up and get active during the day and keep screen time to a minimum.
Keeping your kids healthy is important, so make sure to help them keep things in check this summer!
