Staying Healthy at Work This Cold and Flu Season

By Randi Morse

Businesses build sick days into their employee's schedule because they know, realistically, that eventually an employee is going to be ill. As an employee, however, no one likes to use their sick days when they are actually sick. It's much more enjoyable to utilize those sick days in other ways. Avoid getting sick at work this winter season by following these simple health tips.

Water and Caffeine

Most of us find that we need to have at least a couple of cups of coffee in order to get through a very long day. While having a bit of coffee is fine, drinking too much coffee can do damage to your body. Try practicing moderation by having only one cup of coffee in the morning. You can avoid dehydration by ensuring that you drink enough water. Experts argue over how much water an individual should drink each day, but if you stick to drinking water anytime you are thirsty, it's likely that you will be able to stay hydrated easily.

Watch Flu Season

There are several things you can do during the cold and flu season to avoid catching those nasty germs. To begin with, make sure that your desk is clean and hygienic. Sanitize your hands, either by washing them or using a hand sanitizer, any time after you have dealt with another employee. If you see that employee is visually sick, try to avoid having close contact with them. Also, a large amount of germs enter the body when your hands touch your face. even if you are fastidious about ensuring your hands are clean before you eat, you might be introducing germs into your body simply by rubbing your eyes. If you need to rub your eyes, try using a knuckle instead of your fingers.

Manage Stress

This tip is definitely easier said than done. Stress can cause a great deal of damage on the body, and the more stress you are under, the easier it is for you to become ill. In order to avoid getting sick, make sure you have plans put in place to help you manage stress. One of the easiest ways to beat back stress is to carve time out of your schedule to do things that you enjoy. Maybe you like going to the gym, or maybe you prefer watching movies. Do any activity that helps you to relax, and try to do it on a regular basis.

This cold and flu season stay healthy by being cautious, clean, and minimizing stress. This way you can utilize your sick days for fun reasons, rather than spending those days feeling miserable on your couch.
