How Better Sleep Can Change Your Life
By Genevieve Cunningham
Chances are good that everyone you know needs more sleep. How many times a day do you hear phrases like “I just couldn't sleep last night” or “I'm so exhausted.” Probably a lot! In fact, you probably use these phrases yourself fairly often. While it's easy to ignore this rundown feeling and explain it away as normal, it's really not OK to be tired all of the time. If you're sick of being tired, take a look at these ways in which making sleep a priority can truly change your life.
Energy
This is probably one of the most obvious side effects of getting more sleep, but many don’t realize just how much it can improve everyday life. A lack of energy makes everything that you do feel more difficult. Work is harder. Your patience with your kids is thinner. Working out feels like a beating. But with adequate sleep, you wake up more refreshed and with more energy in your reserves. This means that carrying out each of these tasks is less burdensome, and you might find yourself enjoying everyday life just a little bit more.
Focus
You probably know that unfocused foggy brained feeling all too well. You know you need to work on that project, but you just can’t quite pay attention. You walk into a room only to forget why you went there in the first place. It’s frustrating to say the least. And it definitely leads to a high level of poor productivity. But more sleep may help you beat this feeling and find your concentration again. When you get caught up on rest and stay that way, you may notice that your focus in better than it has been in years, and your productivity rises significantly.
Moods
Bad moods are par for the course when you’re sleep deprived. The exhaustion turns into impatience and frustration and just an overall bad demeanor. But when you restore your lost sleep, these kinds of bad moods almost immediately disappear. Being well rested means you can better deal with the situations thrown at you, and bad moods are fewer and far between.
There’s simply no getting around the need for sleep. Our bodies and minds need adequate rest, and when we don’t get it, we suffer in a big way. Make sleep a priority in your life. Getting enough sleep may be able to completely change your life for the better now and long into the future.
