Pick Your Battles: 3 Starting Points for Good Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
As a whole, American adults are not good at waiting. When we want something, we want it now. We want to be instantly gratified. Of course, there's very little in life that works this way. Waiting is often a part of the process -- especially for the important things. When it comes to our health, waiting is essential. If you try to change everything at once and expect immediate results, you're going to be sorely disappointed very quickly. So what can you do instead? If you want to improve your health for good, take a look at these three good starting points for beginning your health and fitness battle today.
Small Dietary Changes
Changing your diet is probably a good place to start. So much of our health starts with what we put into our mouths. But don't overhaul everything at once. Start with some simple changes like changing soda for water or eating a healthier breakfast. Once you've mastered one small change, you can make another. Be slow and deliberate, and you'll be setting yourself up for better health long-term.
Sleep
We ignore sleep problems way too often. We assume that missing sleep is normal, that it's not a big deal. But nothing could be further from the truth. Sleep is when our bodies grow and heal and recuperate. Go ahead and put a little focus on improving your sleep. Set a bedtime, make your environment comfortable, and limit technology in the bedroom. As your sleep improves, you'll likely notice that other areas of your health improve in big ways as well.
Regular Movement
Movement is an essential part of good health. We have to move. The good news is that it doesn't take much movement to improve your health. If you have the time, energy, and money, go ahead and join a gym. But if you're not up for that yet, it's also fine to just start taking evening walks. Just get moving in whatever way you can for an almost instant boost in physical and mental well-being.
Picking your battles is a skill -- and it's one that we all need to master. When it comes to your health, the concept is no different. Use these options as places to begin, and you'll be well on your way to better health in no time at all.
