Don't Let the Weather Keep You From Getting Into Shape
By Stephen R. Farris
While it may be springtime, there are still many parts of the United States that continue to experience colder than normal weather. The urge to put on your running shorts and T-shirts and hit the outdoors for a little exercise might not be a great idea if you live in the upper Midwest or northeastern states. You still have to dress for the conditions, as well as continue warming up accordingly when it's cold outdoors.
One of the sad facts about cold weather is it makes you feel like staying indoors more, and forget about exercising until it's warmer. However, there are a few things you can do to combat those feelings.
Exercise in Numbers
Exercising in numbers, or joining a group of like-minded people, can help you fight off the feeling of staying indoors during cold spells. You'll feel more depended upon, and obligated to get up and join the group for a jog or walking. Consider those in your group as teammates and you're all working together to achieve your goals of getting in better shape. Plus, you can keep each other motivated.
Goal Setting
With springtime in the forefront, a little goal setting couldn't hurt. For instance, toward the end of winter most recreational organizations post upcoming athletic meets or fun runs. The meet or race deadline can be very quick (maybe a month or less away from taking place), so getting in shape to compete might be a goal to get you started. Usually, there is a cost involved to enter a competition. That could be another motivator to get it in gear and prepare ahead of time. The last thing you want to do is waste your money these days.
Conquer the Cold Weather
Find an outdoor sporting event you like and conquer the cold weather. If you live close to the mountains, go out and do some skiing or snowboarding. Running and walking is great for any weather. Most winter sports activities are parallel with many indoor activities, in which you still get the benefits of cardio exercise, plus you may actually see an increase in your endurance as well.
The bottom line is that you don't have to wait until the end of winter to start getting into shape. You can do so no matter what type of weather is happening around you. Just do it!
