I have been in private practice since my graduation from Palmer College of Chiropractic (Davenport, Iowa) in 1992. My journey has taken me to Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, Illinois and even the US Virgin Islands. I have been in the Rockford area most of the last 15 years.
I was raised in Bettendorf, Iowa. I competed in gymnastics in high school and into college. I am a huge Iowa Hawkeyes fan and I try to annually attend a football game and wrestling meet. While at Palmer College I started to play rugby and continued for several years after.
In the Rockford area I have been very involved in the fitness world through my practice and CrossFit. I have co-owned a local CrossFit gym and still coach some CrossFit athletes. I also have competed in CrossFit locally and nationally.
While I have treated many professional athletes over the years, in a variety of sports, my practice focus has always been on lifetime family wellness care. I like to call it, “wellness care from birth to death.”
Outside of the office I am a proud husband to my wife Brandy, honored to be the father of my sons Brandin and Sawyer, and my step daughters Hailey and Madison. Brandy and I are also blessed to be grandparents to our granddaughters Alex and River.
When I am not in the office, Brandy and I workout nearly everyday. I am also a huge fan of high school and college wrestling, football, rugby and CrossFit. But nothing is more relaxing than watching a great movie.
I look forward to providing affordable and high quality chiropractic care to you all here at The Joint in Rockford.
My chiropractic education began when my father moved his family to Davenport, Ia to study chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1967, I was 3 years old. My earliest memories are afternoons spent in the student clinic, my dad practicing his setups and thrusts then sliding down the table as it rose to its upright position.
Dad passed in 2003 but his love of and devotion to chiropractic continues in my two sisters and me.
When I separated from the military I was in my mid-twenties, living in Italy, when I met an American couple who needed a crew member aboard their 48 foot sloop, Halcyon. This opened the door to a number of adventures at sea.
After Italy, I returned to the US and worked a number of jobs before going to live in Ireland where I worked as a mechanic, a delivery driver and a cemetery worker. It was while I was in Ireland that I decided to return to the US and, finally, further my education.
Back in the US, in St. Louis, Mo, I took undergraduate degrees in electronic engineering and engineering management before attending Logan College of Chiropractic where I earned a third undergraduate degree in human biology before earning my Doctor of Chiropractic in 2008.
With my diploma in hand, I took the certification exams in the United Kingdom and practiced with my older sister in Salt Coats, Scotland.
When my work visa expired, I returned to the US, to live with my younger sister in Crystal Lake, Il, and I am excited to be working at The Joint in Rockford and look forward to helping my patients attain, and maintain their health.
In fifth grade, I experienced back and neck pain. My parents took me to a prominent Chicagoland orthopedic clinic. The orthopedist diagnosed me with advanced degenerative disc disease. He informed my parents that there was nothing that could be done, and that I would just have to live with it, and he advised removing me from all sports. Years later in high school, I was at the soccer try outs and I began to experience acute debilitating back pain; it was actually hard to breath because the pain was so sharp. I limped up to my car (a 1986 Chevy Nova that I bought for $300!) and drove myself to the closest doctor’s office that was open, a chiropractor! In the 90s seeing a chiropractor was “risky business” as the AMA (American Medical Association) had just lost a court case brought forth against them, to stop their smear campaign against Chiropractors (Wilk v. American Medical Association, 895 F.2d 352, 7th Cir. 1990) and the American public, myself included, still believed the AMA’s smear campaign to be true. However, I was in pain and desperate. I allowed this doctor to examine me, then adjust me. I felt immediate relief. I still had pain, but I was out of the debilitating pain. After about 2 months of regular treatments the pain that had plagued me since I was a young child was completely resolved. It allowed me play polo, and become a successful wrestler throughout high school.
I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, and went on to become a full- time firefighter and paramedic for 10 years. During that time, I became an accomplished boxer. I transitioned to become a USA boxing licensed coach, then a USA boxing licensed judge and referee. I also became a commercial bee keeper. In 2016, an opportunity presented itself to move on from my career as a firefighter and paramedic. I seized the opportunity, and with it I applied to a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine program at the National University of Health Sciences. During my time there I became the University’s neuroanatomy tutor. I became a research assistant and worked my way up to become the research fellow for Dr. Gregory Cramer. This led to my first publication in an academic journal. Taking night classes, I earned my Illinois acupuncture certification. I also earned my Medical Neuroscience certification from Duke University School of Medicine and the Duke institute for Brain Sciences. Currently I am working towards both my diplomate from the American Chiropractic Neurology Board and my fellowship from the American College of Functional Neurology.
Dr. Shannon Gilmore is a 1998 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Missouri. She has also successfully completed a three-year post-graduate program in Chiropractic Neurology. This has given her another avenue of approach to complicated chiropractic patient problems.
Dr. Shannon’s love and appreciation for chiropractic began while working with her father, Dr. JJ Gilmore in his office in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. She saw the amazing healing benefits of chiropractic care on patients of all ages. This inspired her to follow in her father’s footsteps. After graduation, she worked as an associate for a year in Island Lake, Illinois, and later a large family practice in St. Louis, Missouri before opening her own office in Schaumburg, Illinois in 2000. She also had the opportunity to work with her father in Verona, Italy until his passing in 2001.
Along with private practice, Dr. Gilmore worked from 2002-2015 at the college level in both medical assisting and massage therapy programs. She taught such subjects as anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, and medical terminology among others.
Dr. Gilmore has taken all of the learning experiences working in different countries, with a wide variety of students and patients and uses them to give the absolute best health care to her patients treating them with the individual care and respect that each person deserves. It will be her greatest pleasure to bring that same level of expertise and care to you and your family.
