Slick Tricks of Successful People
By Sandy Schroeder
Many of us have put our work on the back-burner as we focused on the health and safety of our families, but now we can move ahead and project for the future.
Forbes has some wise suggestions on how to do just that. Most of us know someone who makes everything look easy. They thrive wherever they are, at home, at work or at play. Forbes tells us a few of their secrets.
Must do: 20-minute daily break - For starters, just be with yourself for a while each morning. Put your phone on hold and disconnect from all of the buzz around you. Pause and let your mind quiet as you consider how you feel and who you are. That short break can keep you balanced all day long.
Find out what helps you relax - You may love stretching, depend on a weekly yoga class to refocus the body and the mind, or use simple morning and evening meditations to find peace. Or you may find music, outdoor time and good books help. Whatever works, use the most effective methods to decompress every day.
Make room for daily exercise - Get up an hour early to walk or run or take small breaks during the day to do short walks and stretches. When the body is in motion life improves. The brain clears and the muscles relax. Regular physical activity is critical for success. Do whatever it takes to keep moving. The heart, lungs, brain, muscles and bones depend on regular exercise to stay healthy.
Treat yourself better - Fresh haircuts, regular skin care, and weekly massages will reinforce your confidence and make you feel more normal again. They create the positives that we all need to show up and do our best.
Review medical and dental checkups - If you have been postponing checkups, now is the time to schedule the appointments you need and catch up on any maintenance needed.
Make time to play - If you are like me, you put a lot of priorities in front of pleasure, but this may be the time to reverse the flow. Time out for an afternoon away or a long weekend to head to the water or the hills could recharge your batteries and help your whole family regain their perspective.
Make time for little pleasures - Play with your pets, browse your favorite bookstore or head to your favorite deli. Little moments can remind us of how much there is in life to enjoy.
Recognize joy when you see it - As you take a more positive stand, look around your world. You may see your kids laughing, your friends responding, your work improving. That's success in the making. Enjoy.
