7 Ways to Live Longer and a Lot Better
By Sandy Schroeder
Most of us are focused on daily challenges, but we would not mind living longer too. If you can relate, you may be frustrated with your daily habits and current schedule. What to do? How should all of this really work?
Flip the page and do things differently. Make a list of the things you would like to change and then do it. Here are some starter ideas from the Mayo Clinic.
Use sleep to refuel - You may be so exhausted that you just collapse at night, but making sleep a priority could change the rest of your life. When your head is clear and you are ready to go every morning, you will know how sleep can help. Get 7-9 hours every night and go to bed at the same time each night. Work to eliminate stress in your life and create nightly sleep rituals like soft music and warm baths.
Make food a healthy adventure - Buy more fresh fruits and vegetables and build your menu around your family's healthy favorites. Bake and cook with your family and sit down together to talk and enjoy good food.
Limit your news intake - Monitor what your kids watch and turn the TV off most of the time. Talk about major news with kids to help them understand, and escape from the new with lots of outdoor activities.
Get outside and get moving - Start your day with a quick run or walk around the block. Make sure you are moving throughout the day and get outside as much as possible. Sunshine and fresh breezes are always welcome.
Help someone in need - Reach out to help the library, animal or marine shelter, or your local hospital. Lend a hand and donate supplies. Visit elderly neighbors and lend a hand with cleanups at the park.
Remember to laugh - Share a joke with a friend or watch a funny movie with your kids. Keeping your sense of humor can lighten the whole day and bring out the best in your whole family.
Connect with like-minded people - We all know people who never see the bright side of everything. Head in the opposite direction when you see them coming, and hang out with people who always remember to smile, know how to enjoy life and see things just like you do.
