6 Outdoor Fitness Options for the Whole Family

By Brandi Swieter

Spring brings sunshine, flowers, and fresh air. It’s the perfect time to get outdoors as a family and enjoy some quality time together. This can be accomplished through fitness-related activities that get everyone exercising and working up a sweat. With six outdoor fitness options for the whole family, there’s plenty to keep people busy for the entire season.

Bike Ride and Picnic

Taking a family bike ride can feel like a fun adventure, especially for the children. Parents can pack up a healthy picnic and easily get the kids out for some healthy family fun by adding biking to the mix. Start out with a park that isn’t too far away and work your way up to a park farther in distance for better exercise.

A Day at the Lake

It may be too early to head into the water to swim, but families can still enjoy a day at the lake or by the beach getting sun. Bring Frisbees to throw, balls to catch, and perhaps even kayaks or canoes to get into the water without getting wet. Any of these options provides exercise without people even realizing they’re doing it.

Hula Hoop Contest

Hula hoops aren’t often allowed indoors because of their size and the ability to hit something nearby if people aren’t careful. Instead, hula hooping is a perfect activity for outdoors because there is plenty of space around the hula hoopers to swing their hips and move the hoops without causing damage to any belongings. Having a family hula hoop contest is a simple way to get the whole family outside and exercising together. Hula hooping burns calories and strengthens the core.

Play Tag

Playing tag isn’t just for kids. The whole family can get outside and play tag together on a nice spring day to exercise while enjoying the weather. Kids will love that their parents are out playing with them and not simply watching from the window. The game will have everyone’s hearts beating and their muscles working as they run and tag one another.

Jump Rope

Single jump ropes are used in many workout programs to allow an individual to jump and burn lots of calories. Jump ropes that require at least three people, with one jumping and two swinging the ropes, are an even better version. Families of three or more can enjoy jumping together, taking turns with who gets to twirl and who gets to jump inside and be the center of attention.

Rollerblading

Get the whole family a pair of skates and head outside for some rollerblading fun. Be sure the kiddos have on their knee and elbow pads to stay protected while enjoying some time outside rolling down the streets. Younger kids can try roller skates for an easier time. Rollerblading really works to tone the body.

Enjoy some fitness outdoors with the family for a fun and healthy time in the spring. With these six options and more, every family can find some enjoyable activities to complete together. Try one or all for a variety of options that will last the entire springtime and even through summer.
