Chiropractic Advice for Avoiding Falls
By Brandi Swieter
Everyone should start thinking about fall prevention, especially as they age. It’s easy to fall at home by something as simple as tripping over a rug, slipping in the shower, or stumbling over your own two feet in too-big shoes. With some chiropractic advice for avoiding falls, people are much more likely to remain on their feet.
Exercise Regularly
Getting regular exercise could be the difference between falling and staying upright. Exercise strengthens the muscles and joints and ensures the body is flexible. Developing a strong core and legs can also help with balance and keeping the body stable if an obstacle does cause a person to trip.
Choose Comfortable and Supportive Shoes
The shoes a person wears plays a major role in determining their chance of falling. Shoes that are far too large will undoubtedly cause a person to trip. Shoes with no traction and no level of comfort are also likely to cause a problem. Everyone purchasing shoes should choose a pair that is comfortable yet supportive. The footwear should have good traction that keeps them from slipping on wet or smooth surfaces.
Avoid Walking in Socks
Socks and slippers can make a person fall easily, especially when walking on a smooth surface. It’s best to always wear shoes, even when in the house, or go barefoot. Those with a tendency to fall should especially avoid covering their feet when in the home if they want to prevent themselves from slipping and taking a hard spill.
Install Grab Bars
Seniors aren’t the only ones who can benefit from grab bars. Anyone who finds themselves slipping often, particularly in the bathroom, can install grab bars that will offer some grip. People can hold onto these bars in order to lift themselves from a seated position and avoid falling, or lower themselves down as well. Place one near the toilet and in the shower, paired with a non-slip mat. Those who truly have trouble can skip the bar and add safety rails directly around the toilet and a chair in the shower.
See a Chiropractor Regularly
Visiting a chiropractor is just another tip on the list of fall prevention. Seeing a doctor regularly at The Joint Chiropractic can help to improve flexibility and function of the spinal cord and central nervous system, which impacts every movement of the body. A flexible body is going to be more mobile and able to stay upright without worries of falls. Regular chiropractic care will help to maintain strong and healthy joints.
