Using Exercise to Boost Mental Health

By Brandi Goodman

Mental health should be at the top of your priority list. Too many people let their mental health decline, always handling all of their to-do list and letting the stress build up that takes over their mind. It can be easy to get burnt out and feel depressed with all you have going on. Use exercise to boost mental health and improve your well-being overall.

Better Blood Circulation to the Brain

Aerobic exercise is particularly helpful because it provides better blood circulation to the brain. This can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Swimming, walking, cycling, and running are forms of aerobic exercise that should be tried. A simple walk through the woods can help you to get your heart rate up and improve your circulation while also giving you the beautiful sights around you to see. It's a great way to enhance your mood as you see all the beauty in the nature around you.

Releasing Endorphins

Endorphins get released during exercise. These feel-good chemicals help to reduce the feeling of pain while simultaneously enhancing positive and happy feelings. You may experience a feeling of euphoria once your workout is completed.

Providing a Distraction

Sometimes we just need a distraction from the world around us. Exercise provides that. You'll be focusing on the workout you're doing instead of thinking about whatever it is that's plaguing your mind. Yoga is a great option for this because it really gets you focusing on your breathing and maintaining your poses so your mind remains clear of anything else.

Enhancing Self-Esteem

Sometimes it is not what we have going on that causes stress. Sometimes it's how we feel about ourselves. If you are not feeling your best, exercise can help. It can begin to enhance your self-esteem. You may start to feel better about yourself once you realize how strong you are and what your body is capable of when you can complete more repetitions than usual or run a farther distance. You may notice a change in your appearance as you lose weight or gain muscle. This boost in self-esteem can ease feelings of depression and improve daily mood.

Exercise can boost mental health tremendously. Not only does it release endorphins that can enhance your mood and make you feel good, but it gives you something else to focus on for awhile instead of your problems. Start adding exercise into your daily routine whenever there is time and you should start to see your mental health improve.
