The Stress of a Caregiver and How to Avoid It

By Brandi Goodman

Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month falls in June. Now's the time to learn about the importance of caregivers and the stress they can go through. If you're a caregiver responsible for someone with Alzheimer's, a brain disease, or any other ailment, it's imperative that you learn how to avoid the stress that can come with the job so you can avoid a decline in your own health.

Seek Support

You may be the sole person responsible for your loved one, but that doesn't mean you have to bear the full emotional burden. Seek support from other caregivers who understand the difficulties of the job. They can help you see that you're not alone. You can vent any frustrations and challenges to them because they know them all too well themselves.

Make Sure to Exercise

It can be easy to fill your time with the person you're caring for. You're so busy meeting their needs that you let your own fall to the wayside. You need to make sure you're getting exercise when you can and finding time for fitness. This will help to keep you body strong and stable so you can continue to handle your caregiving duties. If you stop exercising and let your muscles get weak, you'll have a hard time managing. Exercise is also great for your mental health because of the endorphins that get released.

Take Breaks

Don't let months pass by before you take a day off. You need frequent breaks so you're able to have a day to yourself for your own needs. It's good to rest once in a while and take a day away from your caregiving duties so you can reset your mind and continue handling all you do without a breakdown. There are respite services that allow you to get a break while your loved one gets to socialize with others who have the same ailment.

Consider New Technologies

You don't have to let an already stressful job continue to be tough when there are other technologies available to make it easier. Consider utilizing some new technologies, such as apps that help you keep track of medications and nutrition intake. You can also check in with doctors via apps and email instead of having to make in-person trips. Things like these can make caregiving a bit easier to handle and reduce some of the stress on your shoulders.

A stressful job, such as caregiving, can lead to many health complications if you aren't careful. Learn how to avoid some of the stressfulness by keeping these tips in mind. You can better manage your anxiety levels on and off the job. It's necessary for your well-being.
