Better Health Should Not Be Penalized in Hockey

By Tom Herrin

That ongoing search for some kind of activity that can improve health can make a lot of stops.  Most people end up getting stuck in the same ruts when they look for something, but there are plenty of things out there that can provide the kind of exercise that can make a difference in health.  The problem is often that people just don’t think of some of them. One that is probably overlooked a lot is field hockey, although many of the same principles apply to soccer. Along with its indoor counterpart, gym hockey, it can be a fun game that has a high level of participation once people see how it works.  What is even better is that it is not limited by age, size, or anything else.

It Can Help Improve Balance and Coordination

Particularly as people age, there may be quite a few problems with managing their body and how it reacts to its surroundings.  As people lose some of their sense of balance and coordination, more accidents tend to occur. Field hockey can help to develop those abilities more.  As people move around the field while attempting to play the ball, they are naturally challenged. This can be a valuable way to sharpen these areas. In doing so, their reactions will be keener.

It May Help With Weight Loss

Whether they will admit it or not, a large number of people struggle with their weight.  While dieting is the real key to weight loss, some kind of exercise is usually needed to help facilitate it.  Playing field hockey can successfully burn calories at a reasonably high rate. The off and on running can help increase the metabolism.  The larger the person, the greater the number of calories that are burned. Since people can pace themselves, they can go at a faster pace as they feel they are ready.

It May Improve Mental Condition

Exercise and activity can help to improve the way the brain works.  Many times, it can cause the release of some chemicals that can help counter depression and some other things.  It also plays a role in sharpening the mind and thinking ability. As you make decisions involving game strategy while playing, you can improve your own problem-solving skills.  In the whole scheme of things, field hockey can be a productive game for any family or gathering. It is a blast to play.
