Goals May Be More Critical to Success in the Cold
By Tom Herrin
No matter what people do, they usually map out some kind of things they are trying to achieve. The mind can establish the pattern for work and determine the level of success anyone can attain. The expression about mind over matter is one that has some teeth in it. As the temperature drops in cooler weather, it may be more critical than ever for people to set goals with their workout program. It simply won't happen if they don't have a goal in mind. It can help, particularly, as they face many of the challenges that await them when they walk out that door.
Have a Good Plan for Better Breathing
One of the things that most people notice when they get out in the cold is that cold air tends to make people experience mucous. It is often a protection mechanism for the respiratory system. It is a way of preventing really cold air from entering it and shocking it, in a way. Wearing a mask or some kind of scarf over the nose and mouth can help to warm the air as it enters the body. It can do a pretty good job and prevent that discomfort that is there when they get out and feel as if they must be getting a cold.
Choose the Best Time for the Workout and Stay with It
It may be a good idea to try to use the sunlight to their advantage as people determine the best time to work out. While evening may have been great in the warmer temps, once there is less light, being outdoors can mean that the temperatures drop faster as soon as the sun goes down. Since it takes some little change of habits and planning accordingly, people will need to modify their personal schedule.
Goals Can Drive Actions
Even though many of us are not so formal as to set written goals, doing so can help to guide our actions. Establishing some definite goals can help us to have something to work for. Many times, small steps can serve to motivate us toward achieving something worthwhile. Working toward a given amount of time, or reaching a certain point, may make us feel we have finally accomplished something. It works well for me especially when I have been walking or riding a bicycle. When temps are colder, using goals can help us to have the determination to go on knowing that there will be a point in which we have arrived.
