Finding Ways to Avoid Doing Less May Build Health

By Tom Herrin

One of the most natural things for people to do is look for some way to cut corners in performing work.  That is, saving some steps is a goal of many.  While that may sound good, it may be doing much more harm in the way of allowing the body to deteriorate.  Pretty much anything will tend to waste from lack of use, and the body is no exception.  Cutting some of those corners may, in fact, be cutting years off of life.  The good thing is that it doesn't take much to turn that around.  A little commitment may go a long way.

Falling Apart May Be a Choice at Times

A lot of people see themselves as very limited in their physical abilities as they age.  There may be good reason, but there may be almost none at all.  While most people experience some issues with age, some are due to a slowing down in activity by choice.  Too many times, people feel they owe it to themselves to do less.  The fact is that many people do a personal injustice by limiting their activity.  It has been said that fewer than 20 percent of those 65 and older get the amount of exercise that is recommended for good health.  That recommendation is less than three hours per week.  That may be broken down to less than 30 minutes per day in order to help protect against many of the health issues that can plague people.

Some People Maintain Health With Small Increments

Many people likely believe that they must have some length to their exercise session in order for it to really do any good.  According to a study that was published in the journal Hypertension, people in the 55 to 80 group may have significant health benefits by walking only 30 minutes per day.  What is even more striking is that, in some groups of women, walking for only three minutes at a break every half hour may help to manage blood pressure.  For many people, this is great news that can work for them.

Finding Ways to Exercise Should Be Part of the Plan

Too many times, we look for ways to reduce the amount of effort we put out.  It seems that we may separate the real exercise from doing something to improve our condition.  I look for whatever I can do to take a few extra steps when I can.  It may be something as simple as walking to the store a couple of blocks away or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.  It doesn't take much, but with a little forethought, we can get in a few more minutes of exercise each day without feeling exhausted when doing so.
