Do for Yourself as You Age by Weight Training

By Tom Herrin

If you are concerned about getting older, you are not alone.  Many people fear the unknown, and aging certainly carries lots of uncertainty.  We may see individuals who appear to be advanced in age and can barely move around or do anything for themselves.  Some of this may be unavoidable, but some of it may be something that we have much more control over than we may realize.  Even though we probably wouldn't guess, lifting weights can actually be a great benefit to many of us as we grow older.  It may just be a matter of planning and educating ourselves about it.

Be Trimmer and More Fit

It is obvious that our bodies change as we age.  Our metabolism slows down, and we lose muscle.  Working with weights can help us to burn fat and build muscle mass.  Studies have shown that we may have fairly significant increases in muscle by doing so.  We will naturally hold ourselves better, which can reflect greater levels of confidence.  According to one study, participants reduced their physical age by as much as five years.  That is almost like a fountain of youth.

Maintain Independence

As we grow older, one of our big concerns is often to remain as independent as possible.  When we work out with weights, we may be able to do things for ourselves rather than require help.  Even the small things, such as doing things around the home, can become a chore as we age.  Too many times, people must sacrifice the ability to run their own lives in order to have the assistance they may need.  The risk of falling is a real concern for many.  Others may struggle with simply walking from one place to another.  Weight training may help to counter this problem.

Preserve Mental Abilities

It is natural for many of us to begin to have a decline in some of our mental functions as we age.  We have all seen that in others. Studies have shown that those who are involved in weight training may avoid some of the loss of this.  There was a noticeable reduction in memory loss as well as less depression.  It appears that working to improve strength may keep our minds working as well.  There is no doubt that some of this may be due to better circulation and blood supply.
