Adjust, Adapt and Pedal Away From Sitting Issues
By Sandy Schroeder
Many of us sit about 80 percent of the day, going from work desk to home couch to driver's seat and back. If you understand the problem completely, and are still looking for ways to turn the sitting issue around, here are some possibilities to improve sitting wherever you are.
Adjust Your Work Seat
Acquiring the most flexible "six-way seating" may be well worth the effort. To keep the cost down you can shop office site closeouts where recent office furniture sometimes includes high quality adjustable chairs.
When you can raise, lower, adjust armrests, and adjust back support from straight up to leaning back, and the seat portion from flat to angled, slightly raising the legs, your body may be very pleased with the custom flexibility.
The one that I have turned up in an office closeout and cost a fraction of what it would new. It was reasonable enough that you might buy more for other members of the family to do homework or work at home too. If you do not acquire a flexible chair, you can still make sure you have adequate back support, and change the angle of the legs with raised foot support.
Adapt With More Changes and Movements
The adjustable computer stands that allow you to go from sitting to standing actually work and guarantee you won't be locked into one sitting position for long stretches of time. Making the effort to stand while talking on the phone or talking to office visitors can also break up your sitting time. Developing some office stretches may work too as you do standing planks or sit and stand stretches. Walking to other offices instead of emailing or texting also helps.
Pedal Away While Sitting at Home or at Work
Under-the-desk elliptical units are available to use at home or in the office. They provide quiet low joint impact exercise with different resistance levels, step tracking, distance covered and calories burned. In bad winter weather this might be just the right option at home, or at work. You may have already added your treadmill, yoga mat or stationary bike in the family room, but this is one more way to fight the sitting issue.
