Reduce Your Risk of Kidney Disease

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being overweight can cause many health problems. It can strain the kidneys, increasing the risk of disease. Create a sensible plan of diet and exercise to get to and maintain a healthy weight. Consult with your doctor or a nutritionist for help. A personal trainer or lifestyle coach may also be useful. Obesity is unhealthy.

Stay Active

Spend 30 minutes four or five times a week being active. Choose whatever suits you. You can walk, run, or play your favorite sport. Some people like yoga, Pilates, or Zumba. Dancing is great exercise and a lot of fun. No matter what you choose, do it consistently and you will be helping your kidneys stay healthy.

Eat Well

A healthy diet is vital to kidney health. High amounts of sodium should be avoided. Use spices other than salt to season your meals. Be careful about foods that contain a lot of salt. Many types of meat, cheese, and processed foods are loaded with sodium. Be careful how much sugar you ingest. There are many foods that have more sugar than you might think, including fruit juices and salad dressings. It pays to read labels. You also want a low-fat diet and to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Good Sleep

Sleep is another pillar of good health and the kidneys are no exception. Most people need at least seven hours of solid sleep with many needing eight or nine. Set your bedroom up to be dark and quiet. Avoid electronics right before bed. They can make it difficult to fall and stay asleep. Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature. It should be a sleep sanctuary. Good sleep will aid in the prevention of any disease including the kidneys.

As one of the body's most important organs, you want to take good care of your kidneys. Dialysis is a hard thing to go through and transplants involve waiting lists and intense surgery. Follow these tips to reduce the chances of kidney disease.
