Prevention and Recovery Tips For a TBI

By Brandi Goodman

With Trauma Awareness Month in May, learning about traumatic brain injuries, or a TBI, is ideal. People everywhere should always do what they can to prevent themselves from incurring a TBI. Those who do develop one need to know how best to recover to ensure the best quality of life possible. A few tips will help.

Avoid Risky Activities

Certain activities put you more at risk for developing a brain injury. Sports are especially risky. These things should be avoided if you've already suffered an injury to your head and want to prevent further damage. Even something as simple as going for a bike ride can be dangerous if you don't use the necessary precautions. This means wearing a helmet to keep the head protected should an accident occur.

Enhance Your Home's Safety

Safety features within the home can be a huge help in preventing further injury. You can enhance your home's safety by removing rugs that are easily tripped over, installing grab bars in the bathroom, and adding non-slip mats where necessary. One fall could be all it takes to bump the head and cause a serious injury to the brain. Preventing them is key.

Nap When Necessary

Adequate rest can help provide the time you need to recover. Try to take it easy when you're living with a TBI and nap when necessary. You want to feel rejuvenated and get the extra energy you need to make it through the day and not be left feeling exhausted and overworked.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the best ways to help your body and mind remain strong. Though you may want to avoid anything too strenuous or potentially dangerous, plenty of light exercise options exist. You'll be able to burn some calories and decrease your stress levels even when working out at home doing something relatively simple. A walk is also a good option.

Stimulate Your Mind

A brain injury can leave you unable to comprehend things as you once did. Stimulating your mind regularly can help to improve your memory, cognitive abilities, and even speech. Try music therapy or art as ways to do this.

Preventing a TBI and recovering from one after it's been experienced is possible with a few tips in mind. You always want to keep the brain as healthy as possible so no serious damage occurs that has long-lasting effects.
