Turn Your Thanksgiving Healthy With These 6 Dishes

By Brandi Goodman

Large Thanksgiving feasts usually adorn the family table. Many of these meals tend to include fattening dishes and high-calorie sides along with sugar-filled desserts. None of these are healthy options that people should be consuming in excess. Turn your Thanksgiving healthy with six dishes that will increase your meal's nutrition factor.

Butternut Squash Soup

Not many people tend to serve soup at Thanksgiving, but they should. It's a great addition to the menu on a particularly cold day. Butternut squash is an easy vegetable to get your hands on during the fall and winter season. It also packs a lot of essential nutrients. Vitamin E, folate, manganese, and more is provided by butternut squash. A rich soup can be created from it.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes With Honey and Cinnamon

Some sort of sweet potato dish is usually served at Thanksgiving. Most of the time, it's piled with marshmallows. This makes the dish laden with sugar and calories. Roast your sweet potatoes instead and simply season them with cinnamon and honey. They'll still be flavorful and sweet.

Herb and Apple Stuffing

Stuffing is another classic offering at the Thanksgiving table. Cut down on some of the sodium and calories by creating a homemade version rather than purchasing a box mix. An herb and apple stuffing helps bring in some nutrients. Apples are loaded with Vitamin C and the herbs help to create a unique flavor. Use whole wheat bread instead of white to make the dish even more beneficial.

Green Bean Casserole

Traditional green bean casserole recipes call for cans of cream of mushroom soup. This store-bought soup is packed with sodium. Create a completely homemade version instead for a flavorful dish that has fewer calories and less sodium to impact your heart. Low-fat milk should be utilized for creaminess.

Glazed Carrots and Turnips

Carrots provide Vitamin A that is beneficial for the eyes. They're also low in calories. Turnips are loaded with vitamins, folate, and fiber. They are just as low in calories. Combine the two together in a glazed dish and you have a healthy side dish fit for Thanksgiving.

Skinny Pecan Pumpkin Pie Bars

Pumpkin pie is the Thanksgiving dessert of choice for many households. A store-bought serving offers far too much sugar and calories though. Make skinny pecan pumpkin pie bars instead to still get a similar flavor while cutting down the negatives.

Your Thanksgiving meal can still be a great one even with health in mind. You don't have to serve nothing but salad to make the meal healthful. Just choose some dishes with nutritious ingredients that will bring benefits to your body.
