Sleep Solutions When You're Feeling Sick

By Brandi Goodman

Falling asleep when you aren't feeling well can be a tough task. It's hard to get enough Zzz's when your body is aching or you're constantly coughing. With a few sleep solutions when you're feeling sick, you can get the rest you need more easily.

Keep Your Head Propped Up

Laying down and having your head even with the rest of your body could be part of the reason you're suffering. You may be feeling more sinus pressure in this position. Keep your head propped up so you can breathe a little easier and hopefully drift off long enough to get some relief.

Clear Your Nasal Passages

Having a stuffy or runny nose can make it difficult to fall asleep. You need to try and clear your nasal passages if you have any hope of getting the rest your body needs. Try a nasal spray or use saline solution mixed with water and squirt it through one side of your nose to help clear everything out.

Use Essential Oils in a Diffuser

A diffuser that allows the aroma of essential oils to fill the air can help tremendously. You'll be able to breathe in the scent of whatever is inside, which can aid in making you feel tired and improve your ability to drift off. Lavender is ideal for this. You may also opt for eucalyptus or tea tree oil  when you're stuffy.

Set Up a Humidifier

If dry air is causing you to cough repeatedly, it may be wise to set up a humidifier in your room. It works to moisten the air and help you breathe easier at night. If water is needed in your version, be sure you fill it just before you're ready to hit the hay so it's more likely to continue misting throughout the entire night.

Sip on Some Hot Tea

Tea is ideal when you're feeling under the weather. Hot tea can help to soothe an irritated throat and relax your mind and body so you're ready for bed. You could even use hot water, lemon, and honey if you don't have any tea available. Make sure you aren't choosing a tea with caffeine included, which will only keep you up.

Sleep is hard to come by for many people - sick or not. It's important to find ways that work best for you so you can finally drift off at night. With these tips in mind, you may be able to get the Zzz's you need to help recover from the sickness and get feeling better promptly.
