Staying Fit and Healthy During the Colder Months

By Donna Stark

Fall is a great time of the year to head outdoors and have some fun, but it is also the perfect time to stay indoors and settle into that comfortably-used spot on the sofa, isn't it? After all, the temptation to choose warmth, comfort food, and a remote control in your hands over chilly temperatures and dreary days is great during this time of year, but that doesn't mean you should give up on your health. Keeping up your exercise routine, consuming a healthy diet, and getting the recommended amount of sleep each night is critical if you want to sustain your immune system during the upcoming months, so finish the last few weeks of the year as strong and healthy as you can! Take a peek at the following suggestions  on how to do so.

Switch up Your Fitness Routine

The colder weather shouldn't be an excuse for not exercising. There are plenty of indoor options you can choose, but if push does come to shove, you can still participate in some outdoor workouts too. In fact, outdoor exercises will give you an extra dose of Vitamin D, which is essential for the body. For indoor exercises, you can join a fitness class, swim at your local gym, or practice yoga on the floor of your bedroom. Outdoor exercises may require extra layers of clothing, but you can go for a run, hit the slopes if your area already has snow, or enjoy a late afternoon walk.

Make Smart Food Choices

There is no better time to make sure your immune system is operating at its peak than during the cold and flu season, so make sure you are nourishing your body with as many immunity-boosting foods as you can. Skip the creamy chowders and opt for a vegetable-rich soup (add some homemade bone broth to elevate it even more), increase your intake of foods rich in Vitamin C, and try to incorporate more color on your plate.

Manage Your Natural Circadian Rhythm

As darkness steals the light and our days become shorter, your natural circadian rhythm may be thrown off track, so pay attention to your sleep schedule. Aim for a minimum of seven hours of sleep each night by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, removing disruptions, and keeping your room dark and cool!

Staying Fit and Healthy

Don't let your healthy bones turn to lazy bones this season. Stay active, eat well, and get a decent amount of rest each night so your body is adequately prepared for whatever lies ahead! The actions you take now will determine how well your year ends, so stay committed to a healthy lifestyle. Your body will thank you for it!
