Is Your Body Ready for Summer?
By Genevieve Cunningham
The warm air is here to stay. When spring and summer finally roll around, we all get just a little excited. We look forward to this time of year. It means less school, a carefree atmosphere, and plenty of time in the sun. Your mind is more than ready for the change of season. But in all seriousness -- is your body ready? If you're anxious to get the summer started off on the right foot, take a look at these ways to determine whether your body is ready for summer -- plus some tips for getting it prepared.
Have You Been in the Sun?
The summer means plenty of sunshine. It means sunburns and suntans and light streaks in your hair. But is your skin ready? If you've been spending all of your time indoors, the direct sunlight will be a shock to your system. You'll be more likely to burn, which makes you uncomfortable and is really bad for overall health. Start slathering on the sunscreen, and then get outside in small increments. Work up to longer time in the sun, and it will be easier on your skin to adjust.
Are You Ready for the Heat?
Along with the sun comes the almost unbearable heat. Living in the south gives you an edge, but you still have to be prepared. If you've been spending all your time in an air conditioned environment, it's going to be really hard to get outside for long periods of time. Do it slowly. Go outside for just a few minutes per day to get adjusted. Make sure you stay in the shade, have fans available, and get out of the heat when you're feeling unwell. The heat can be dangerous, so give your body plenty of time to adjust to the rising temperatures.
Are You Confident?
Summer means clothes that cover less skin. It's how we stay cooler. But if you're not confident in your body, you won't be able to enjoy summer properly. Go ahead and start an exercise routine right now. Get moving and build some endurance. Lift weights to help burn fat. The more confident you feel in the condition of your body, the more fun you'll be able to have throughout the duration of the summer.
It's not too late to prepare for summer. The time is now! Use these tips to get your body ready for the new season, and have more fun and better health all summer long.
