Signs that Your Body is Addicted to Sugar

By Alexis Mills

Sugar addiction is becoming more and more real because of how much sugar is in the foods that we eat. It's truly addictive and is the main reason why people get unhealthy cravings. The even worse part is that sugar is linked to so many health issues and diseases such as obesity to headaches. Many people aren't even aware that they are addicted or have a problem. If you aren't sure you have a problem or are scared that you might, here are some top signs you have a problem.

  • You indulge in sugary food more than you intended - When one piece just isn't enough and you constantly feel like you want more, but regret it right afterwards, is a sign of sugar addiction.
  • You crave simple carbohydrates - Eating foods such as white bread, pasta, rice, pastries are all examples of simple carbs that turn into sugar in the body. Craving these foods shows that it is feeding the body's addiction to sugar
  • You crave meat or salty foods - If you are craving meat and salty foods, it can be your body's way of telling you that you need to balance out the sugar with some other foods. It also works vice versa. So, if you are eating too much meat or salt, then the body can start to crave sweets to balance it out.
  • You constantly eat sugar even when you don't want to - When someone asks you if you want a candy bar and say no, but eat it five minutes later, may be a problem. Trying to go through your head as to why it's OK and convincing yourself why it's okay to eat it.
  • You eat sugary foods to the point that you feel terrible - Indulging to the point that you feel sick are signs you have a sugar hangover. The short-term benefit of eating a lot of sugar is great, but the aftereffect makes you feel terrible is a sign you have an addiction to sugar.

If you have multiples of the above symptoms, chances are that you have a problem. Being addicted to sugar is much more common than you might think. If you are a coffee hound, constantly need to snack, always stressed out, eat a lot of fruit, and crave unhealthy foods then it's quite possible that your body is addicted to sugar. The first step is awareness, so if you now realize that you have a sugar addiction there are plenty of resources that you can use to overcome your sugar addiction.
