How Stress Plays Out in Your Body

By Sandy Schroeder

When your head hurts or your back aches, stress may be the culprit pulling the strings. The Mayo Clinic doctors say stress can be the trigger behind many of our illnesses.

The next time you have a headache, think about what else might have been going on. If family, financial, or job worries were on your mind, they may have triggered your headache too.

Spotting Stress Symptoms

When you recognize stress symptoms you can take steps to intercept them with long walks, quiet meditations or comforting talks with friends. If you ignore those stress symptoms, they can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes.

Here are some of the ways stress plays out on the body.

  • Headaches may come from stress along with anxiety, and overeating or undereating
  • Muscle tension or pain, restlessness and angry outbursts can all come from stress
  • Chest pain, loss of energy and drug or alcohol use may be triggered by stress
  • Fatigue, smoking and feelings of being overwhelmed can all spring from stress
  • An upset stomach, inactivity and sadness or depression can be caused by stress
  • Stress can also keep you up at nights.

How to Make Stress Go Away

If you recognize these connections and want to ditch that headache, upset stomach or feeling of sadness, it may be time to find good ways to eliminate the stress.

  • Find ways to laugh more
  • Get outside and exercise every day
  • Reach out to family and favorite friends
  • Try yoga or tai chi
  • Find a good breathing exercise
  • Start meditating in the morning and the evening
  • Read more and listen to your favorite music
  • Get enough sleep
  • Avoid tobacco, too much caffeine, alcohol and illegal substances
  • Eat a healthy diet and avoid junk food

If you are still having stress symptoms, see your doctor and consider seeing a therapist to work through the issues.

Alert: Get emergency help immediately if you have shortness of breath, chest pain, pain from the shoulder and arm, jaw or backpain, sweating, nausea or dizziness. These are all signals of a heart attack. Call 911 or go to ER.

We all recognize stress, but what it does to us and what we do about it can make a big difference in our lives. Do something about it now and feel the difference.
