Easy Diet Tips for the Absolute Beginner

By Genevieve Cunningham

What’s really in a healthy diet? Many people get stuck on the word “diet,” and they forget that eating healthy doesn’t have to be rocket science. There’s no magic pill, no magic food, and no quick and easy fix. Making a well balanced diet a part of the routine takes information, time, and continual effort. But if you’re not familiar with eating healthy, this might feel more difficult than it has to be. If you’re having trouble getting started, take a look at these tips that work for an absolute beginner.

No More Junk Food

Getting started really can be as easy as throwing out junk food. While there’s probably still quite the learning curve as to what qualifies as junk food, there are some obvious foods that should not be in the cabinet. No cookies, chips, fried foods, sugary snacks, or sodas. For some, this might require you to clean out most of the cabinet, but the positive effects that follow the elimination of junk food will absolutely be worth it.

Water, Water, Water

This is another simple tip, even if it seems a bit difficult in the beginning. We’ve been so conditioned to drink flavored drinks, it can be hard to give them up and switch back to water. But water has zero calories, enhances metabolism and digestion, and keeps you feeling fuller longer. There’s simply no replacing the value of drinking good old H2O. If you’re looking for an easy start to eating better, this is one of the best places to start.

Eat Veggies and Protein

When in doubt, say yes to vegetables and protein and no to everything else. Every meal should contain some protein, be that red meat, chicken, fish, or something else. Sides should include healthy vegetable choices, with at least one of them being green. If faced with choices, avoid the heavy starches (white rice, potatoes, noodles), and opt for fresh vegetables as much as possible. As you learn more about healthy eating, you'll be able to slowly add more options back into the regular menu.

It can be tough to completely change the habits that are already instilled, especially when it comes to what we eat. But if you’re willing to make the change, these tips can help you get started without too much intimidation. Over time, you’ll perfect these habits and have a diet plan that any fitness enthusiast would envy.
