3 Things to Remember When Quitting Sugar

By Genevieve Cunningham

A new wave of people seem to have taken on the task of quitting sugar. With all of the new information and research about the sweet white substance, people are discovering that excessive sugar intake may be responsible for at least part of their health troubles. If you are thinking of jumping on the no sugar bandwagon, make no mistake about it: Quitting sugar is hard. But luckily, it can be done, and doing so may bring some wonderful side benefits. Before you begin the task of cutting back, take a look at these things to remember throughout the entirety of your journey.

You're Breaking an Addiction

Don't forget that sugar is an addictive substance. When you choose to quit, you are literally breaking an addiction. And depending on how much you consumed, your addiction may be mild or incredibly strong. But why does this matter? Knowing that you're addicted should help you remember to go easy on yourself. It won't be easy, and you should not expect it to be. When it gets tough, remind yourself that this is an addiction, and then keep trudging through.

You Might Have Some Negative Side Effects

Like any addiction, breaking the sugar addiction might bring some negative side effects. Some of the most common include headaches, dizziness, stomachaches, inability to focus, and insomnia. But remember that these side effects will pass. Don't let these let you give up. Keep going and eventually the side effects will let up and you'll begin to feel better than ever before.

You Don't Have to Do All or Nothing

Sometimes when we decide to make changes, we go overboard. We dive in, make lofty goals, and hope for the best. But you don't have to do this when it comes to sugar. It's true that sugar is bad for you, but it's OK to eat it in moderation. If you'd rather cut way back, that's OK. The main goal is to get your sugar consumption under control, not to avoid all sugar for the rest of your life.

If you're trying to cut sugar, you've taken on a big task. But you can be successful as long as you're prepared. Keep these things in mind, and you may find that cutting sugar isn't so bad, and that the improvement in health is definitely worth the effort.
