Sweets May Be Healthy
By Tom Herrin
At one time, having things that are sweet meant taking in large amounts of sugar. Some people were especially vulnerable to problems associated with eating this way. For many years, the only alternative was to avoid such foods or drinks. As with all things, there were some researchers who were diligent in pursuit of something better. The first really successful sugar substitute came along about 140 years ago. It is hard for me to think of such a development in light of the times in general. This was before the Spanish-American War. it had a major impact, even then, as it was used in the first world war.
A Relief for Diabetics
One of the bigger problems society has dealt with is diabetes. Those with it usually had quite a limited life, often dying well before it would have been expected. After the development of a usable type of insulin, a sugar substitute was something that could give diabetics a new lease on life. They are now able to have pretty much whatever foods and drinks they want with only minor modifications. These products have allowed these individuals to again be part of their families at meals.
Managing Weight Is a Maybe
I have worked with people who relied on sugar-free drinks as a part of their daily routine. I couldn't tell that they were able to make any progress, but maybe they avoided more weight gain. There are obviously all kinds of drinks available that do not have sugar, and from the way the shelves seem to empty out, they must be popular. There are also quite a few kinds of foods and snacks that are sugar-free. They are probably not as effective in managing weight as in managing diabetes.
Should Sugar Be Out?
It certainly depends on how we handle it, sugar may not be all bad. For those who overindulge, it can be all kinds of trouble. The tendency to snack without any kind of constraints can get people into trouble they can't get out of. If you are one of those, it may be better to go strictly with substitutes. If you can control yourself, and are not diabetic, sugar may not be so bad. After all, a teaspoon only has about 15 calories. If we can leave it at that, we can have a sensible treat.
