Back Pain is No Fun: Here's How to Avoid It

By Virginia Laird

With summer activities in full swing, there can be little hope to completely avoid back pain. For many, this is the time of year spent on-the-go, bouncing from one fun and exciting activity to the next. Research suggests that being on your feet for a long period of time, as well as being on the move constantly, can invite back pain. Chiropractors have made a few suggestions as to how to avoid suffering with such pain. These include:

  • Use good posture
  • Make exercise part of your routine
  • Dress comfortably

Use Good Posture

Chiropractors suggest that making correct posture part of your life can help deter back pain. When using the right posture, it is suggested that you sit with your feet flat on the ground, and avoid crossing at the knees. Chiropractors suggest that crossing the legs can cause the joints of the spine to shift, leading to restriction and pain. Chiropractors admit that slouching is a bad habit for far too many. For this reason, they recommend that when you catch yourself sitting (or standing) using improper posture that you take a few minutes to stretch your back and neck before changing your position to avoid repeating the posture.

Make Exercise Part of Your Routine

Another tip to help avoid back pain is to make time to exercise often. Chiropractors suggest that as little as 20 minutes of exercise can help release tension that can build. While many may choose to find themselves spending time at the gym, it is not necessary. Research indicates that a brisk walk through your neighborhood can be enough to keep the pain away. Start today making time to get a little exercise.

Dress Comfortably

While you may be one who prefers to dress in the most fashionable way, this wardrobe may not always conform with the activity you participate in. Chiropractors suggest that comfy clothes are best when trying to keep back pain away. When clothing is too tight it can restrict your ability to move freely. Another item which needs to be kept comfy is your shoes. Chiropractors instruct patients to avoid wearing high heels when struggling to prevent back pain. Instead, opt for shoes that are comfortable for your feet and offer plenty of support for your back.

While there are many skeptics when it comes to chiropractic care, research indicates that routine care can be helpful in preventing such pain. Chiropractors focus their care and attention on the joints of the spine. Using adjustments to these joints, chiropractors restore function to the spine which helps eliminate pain.
