Tips to Help You Stick to Your Workout

By Sara Butler

Exercise is a great idea and creating a regular exercise routine is an even better one! But exercise routines have a way of sliding through the cracks and going to the bottom of the priority list. If you’re looking for motivation once and for all to plan a workout routine and stick to it, here are a few things you can do to help you get started and stay on track!

Forget About It

You know that swimsuit sitting in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn since 2005? Throw it away. It’s normal to think about yourself in the same shape you were the last time you worked out regularly, but if that image is from so long ago that we’ve had three presidents since, then it’s time to come up with a new mental image. Don’t think about what you used to look like or what you used to be able to do and make new memories starting now.

Get Prepared

You already know that time is precious, so write down your workout time in your schedule just as you would an appointment. You probably wouldn’t cancel an appointment, so don’t cancel your workout without a good reason. You’re important and deserve the time to focus on yourself and your health.

Go Slow

If it’s been a while since you last worked out, remember that you won’t be able to pick up right where you left off. Start with 20 minutes of low-impact exercises, such as walking, and work your way up from there.

Get Your Family Involved

If you want to turn your exercise time into a family affair, you could all go swimming together or ride bikes. You could even jog next to your children as they ride their bikes. Get your partner in on the action too and sign up for a local race together so you can work toward a goal together.

Show Up

Sometimes, just showing up when you’re really lacking motivation is key. Take the time to pack your gym bag the night before and even if it’s the last thing you feel like doing, go to the gym. Once you’re there, you will probably be able to get in the right headspace to do a workout and stick to your plan.

You can make a plan and stick to it, you just need to focus and keep moving forward with your eye on the prize!
