Fighting the Midday Slump

By Donna Stark

Have you ever felt your energy level drop during the middle of the day? Did it make you feel like you just wanted to sneak out of your office and into your car for a quick little cat nap? I find this happens to me more often than not. And yes, I have been known to move my car to a remote spot in the parking lot to doze off for a few minutes during the day. Being unable to keep your eyes open is definitely not a great feeling, especially after waking up completely refreshed and energized in the morning. But don’t worry, there is hope for combatting the midday slump.

End Your Day Like a Pro

There is no need to pull out your secret-agent moves while sneaking out to your car. Stop hiding from your boss and try these tips instead to finish your day like a warrior.

  • Get up and move - Moving your fingertip across the keyboard isn’t enough to get your energy levels pumped up. Leave your desk behind and take a walk to the water cooler or even better, head outside! A brisk 10-minute walk is enough to energize you for the remainder of the day.
  • Eat a smaller lunch - You don’t need to conjure up memories of your Thanksgiving meal every day. Eating a smaller lunch and reducing or eliminating white flour in your meal can help fight fatigue during the hours after your lunch break.
  • Smell a grapefruit - Citrus fruits are known to help awaken our senses, so slice up a few pieces of lemon and drop them into your water or snack on a grapefruit. Another way you can bring that scent to your desk is through essential oils. Just dab some on your wrists when you start to feel sluggish.
  • Hydrate - We already know that most people don’t drink enough water during the day, but it can be a real lifesaver when you are struggling to stay awake. When your body gets to the point of dehydration, there is a significant increase in fatigue, so drink a full glass of water when the power of fatigue starts to set in.
  • Remember your posture - Stop the bad habit of literally slumping over at your desk. In addition to putting extra strain on your spine, it is also causing your muscles to work overtime. Essentially, the energy you need to finish up your day is being used up by not sitting in the correct position.
  • Get enough sleep - Well, this is a no-brainer but it still needs to be said. Make sure you are getting adequate amounts of sleep each night and that your bedroom is conducive to deep slumber. It really is a game-changer.

Feeling sluggish during the middle of the day happens to most everyone but it doesn’t mean you need to curl up in your cubicle with a makeshift pillow. Combat your fatigue with these tips or come up with your own because no matter what you choose, it won’t go unnoticed.
