Focus on Daily Habits for Optimal Health

One of the most damaging myths that many people believe before they start on a new health and fitness journey is that getting in shape and improving their overall wellness requires a huge lifestyle change. That means giving up all the foods they love, sweating at the gym for hours on end, or maintaining a constant Instagram-worthy life of peace, serenity, and incense. Ugh! No wonder so many give up before they even start. But the truth is, you don’t have to do any of that stuff to improve your health and fitness.

Already Doing What You Need To

Improving your health and getting into shape is as simple as making small, healthy choices on a regular basis. And truth be told, you are probably already making them … just not at a level that will change your overall wellness dramatically. Let’s take a look at what some of these are and how you can amp them up a bit.

  • Cooking - If you know how to cook, you have the power to change how you look and feel. And even if you claim that you “can’t cook,” you probably have more skills than you think. If you can fry an egg and smear avocado on toast, you can make a healthy breakfast. If you can wash and chop veggies and fruit, you can make a killer salad. You don’t need to be a dietitian to learn about nutrition and you don’t need the skills of a 4-star chef to make your meals extra healthy. So be intentional about your time and make some smarter choices in the kitchen.
  • Walking - Sure, it can be hard to find the time to get to the gym every day, but if you do any kind of walking, you are already exercising. Think about it. You park your car and walk into work. You walk your dog morning and night. All of your “mindless” walking throughout the day can really be turned into something more impactful if you make even the slightest changes. So pick up the pace, walk a longer distance, or find some hills. Challenge yourself!
  • Sleeping - It always feels so good to finish your day and head to bed. Those first few seconds when your body falls into a relaxing position are the best, aren’t they? So why do so many of us put off sleep? Why are we shortchanging our bodies by staying up late to finish work or watching that late night television show? Sleep is critical for optimal health, so make it a priority! Create a perfect environment to get the rest you need, establish a bedtime routine … do whatever you need to in order to get the recommended hours of sleep each night.

Forget the Overhaul

Contrary to what many believe, it doesn’t take a complete overhaul to improve the body’s health, wellness, and fitness. Instead, it takes consistent, healthy habits that are performed daily. So yes, you can have that dessert every now and then, but even better, you can toss that patchouli incense.
