How to Handle an Emotional Breakdown
By Genevieve Cunningham
We all have those moments in life when our emotions begin to get the best of us. Break-ups, death of loved ones, loss of employment, and a million other causes can wreak havoc on our emotional well-being. While we can’t avoid all of these situations, we can choose how to handle it. To help you make it through some of those emotional breakdown moments, take a look at these tips.
Find Some Breathing Room
If you’re feeling emotionally spent, allow yourself some alone time to process it. You don’t have to lock yourself in your room for days, but a good hour of alone time gives you some time to scream, cry, or just sit with the overwhelming emotion. Take some deep breaths and collect yourself before being bombarded with anything else in life. Once you’ve done this, get around some people you trust and love for some additional support.
Get Some Physical Movement
Moving your body is one of the best ways to get rid of stress. Once you begin to move, your mind switches gears. Instead of worrying with the emotion, it begins to focus on the physical strain. In this way, exercise is one of your best friends, especially in times of turmoil. Halfway through your workout, the emotional turmoil will be gone … at least for a little while. Run, do some yoga, get in some punches at boxing. Do whatever you need to do to release some energy and refocus your mind.
Focus on Your Reaction
Unfortunately, we can’t control everything that happens in life. But it’s not about controlling everything else; it’s about controlling ourselves. Once the initial shock has worn off, evaluate your own reactions. What should you do now? What are the potential consequences of your actions? Before you allow the emotions to decide for you, make some conscious effort to choose an appropriate path. As long as the emotional breakdown doesn’t turn into bad decision after bad decision, this too shall pass.
Big emotional moments will happen in life. Some will be good and some will be bad. Don’t allow these emotional moments to dictate your life. Choose wisely and make decisions that will help you make it through the turmoil in one piece. Use these tips as a guide, and you’ll make it through to the other side happy and healthy.
