Getting Fit in the Office: Here's What You Can Do

By Genevieve Cunningham

If you're a working professional, chances are good that you spend a lot of time in the office. We're a country that values work. Go in early, stay late … it's almost expected. While working hard can certainly bring about some wonderful benefits into your life, it can also make a few aspects more difficult. And one of the most important aspects that might need some attention is your health. If you spend hours and hours on the clock, but you'd still like to get fit, take a look at these tips to help make it happen.

Focus on Diet

It might be more difficult, but it's entirely possible to watch your diet while you're at work. How? You'll probably have to plan ahead. Pack your lunch and snacks and take them to the office with you. This way, you'll know exactly what you’re going to eat and how many calories you're going to consume. If you eat out at lunch, look at the menu beforehand and make a decision before you ever walk through the door. Focusing on diet won’t get you ripped muscles, but it can absolutely help you lose weight and maintain a proper body fat percentage.

Use Your Surroundings

You may not have time to hit the gym, but you can still work out. How? You'll have to get creative and use what is available. Close your office door and do some squats and lunges. Use your desk to get in some tricep dips. Use your stapler, bottled water, or a paper weight to do some bicep curls. It might not be the hardest workout you’ve ever done, but it will help tone your muscles and work out stiffness to keep you in better shape.

Break the Monotony

The monotony that comes with work is challenging, and truthfully, it can cause you to lose the motivation to get and stay fit. In order to keep your mind moving and engaged, break the monotony as much as you can. Go for a walk at your break. Pace the office while you're on the phone. Get a standing desk. Little breaks in the day can help you get in some movement and prevent long-term boredom that can turn into long-term inactivity.

Work is necessary, and for a lot of people, it's also fulfilling. But spending lots of time at work can definitely cause problems for your health. Use these quick and easy tips to protect your health and get more fit on the clock every day.
