5 Tips for Better Sleep Starting Tonight
By Genevieve Cunningham
You’re not getting enough sleep. That’s not a question … the majority of people aren’t getting enough sleep. This is a fact of living in America. Unfortunately, too many people pride themselves on the ability to thrive on little to no sleep. Stop! A lack of sleep is bad for you! If you’re ready to improve your health and finally get more sleep, take a look at these five tips that might help.
Get More Comfortable
If you’re not comfortable, you’re not going to sleep well. Do your best to make your sleeping environment as comfortable as possible. This will probably include setting the temperature of the room, fluffing the pillows, making the bed, and making sure that your bed is clutter-free. The more comfortable you feel, the easier it will be for you to fall asleep and stay that way.
Avoid the Screen
If you’ve been falling asleep to Netflix, you might consider nixing this from your routine. Screens keep our brains wired and stimulate the eyes. If you want better sleep, it’s probably best to avoid screens before bed. This includes the TV, phone, computer, and other devices.
Make It Dark
Turn off the light. When you sleep with the light on, it messes with your body’s natural rhythm and makes it harder to find sleep. Turn off the main light and anything that glows. The darker the room, the better it is for both your eyes and your brain. If you’re used to sleeping with the light on, this might take some getting used to, but chances are good that it will pay off in the long run.
Unwind First
If you’re going straight from work to bed, you’re not giving yourself a chance. The body and mind need a chance to unwind and slow down. Get a routine that you can do every night. This helps you relax and lulls you to sleep. It might include all sorts of things -- from hot showers to reading a book to watching your favorite show for a few minutes. It doesn’t matter as long as your routine works for you.
Sip Hot Tea
Hot tea -- or milk or even water -- helps calm the stomach, lower stress, and ease the nerves. Sip something warm before bed, and it will help you fall asleep. Just make sure that you avoid caffeine or other stimulants that might perk you up and keep you awake.
Sleep is a necessity. We literally can’t live without it. So why do we try? Use these tips to improve your sleep. With better sleep and more restful nights, you may find that your health, mood, and perspective on life improve for a happier life every day.
