Here's What You Should Know About Workout Recovery

By Genevieve Cunningham

Workout recovery. Do you take a day off every week as recommended? Or are you one of the many who doesn't take a rest day seriously? For some reason, we don't really think of rest days as a necessary component of a workout routine. We don't give it much thought at all, and for the most part, we certainly don't treat a rest day as seriously as any one of our workouts. But why? Usually, it's simply because recovery days are completely misunderstood. If you're guilty of skipping recovery day, take a look at what you should know about getting the rest you need.

It's Necessary

It's easy to think that you should totally skip recovery day. After all, the more you work out, the faster the results. That's how it works, right? Not exactly. As it turns out, recovery day is essential to your goals. Rest day is the day that your muscles are allowed to repair themselves and grow. Rest day is the day your mind is able to stay focused and motivated. Rest day matters! Make sure you're getting at least one rest day out of seven, and you'll be moving closer to your fitness goals.

Food Matters

The food that you consume on your recovery day matters. If you fill your body full of junk, you're not helping it. Your body needs optimal nutrition and plenty of water. Make sure your cabinets are stocked with fruits, vegetables, and plenty of protein. And make sure you're replacing fluids by drinking enough water. If you make your recovery days nutritionally dense, you'll be setting yourself up for better health and faster results.

You Probably Don't Need That Supplement

The market for fitness related power drinks and recovery drinks and energy drinks is completely saturated. Can these kinds of supplements help? It's possible. But it's also possible that you really don't need them at all. Instead of wasting your money on an expensive recovery drink, just eat and drink well every day. This is usually enough to keep your body on track and your fitness moving in the direction you desire.

You shouldn't take recovery day lightly. It's so important! Schedule it into your weekly routine, and don't skip. With the right amount of rest and a solid exercise routine, you can build a strong and healthy body that will keep you well for years to come.
